Koonara Turning of the Leaf

Changing of the leaves

Ahh, the annual changing of the leaves. With no frosts so far, it has kept the leaves on longer than other years, making everything look very colourful and reminding me that I have to stock up on wood for the winter.

Lucy Flowergirl Lucy Reschke Pirate

A Princess and a Pirate
The whole family travelled to Noosa for a cousins wedding. Lucy was asked to be a flower girl, complete with
cute-as-a-button red dress. Alice on the other hand passed on getting hair and makeup done and instead sported a red bandanna and parrot on her shoulder and learned to yell "Arrrrr!!" on the boats to the reception. Pretty funny.

Tip - When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and there won’t be any white mess on the outside of the cake.

Koonara Wine offer of the month -
Belle Amie Pinot Noir 2009 $17.34 (in 1 Doz)

With the same Mean Max temperatures as the Yarra Valley, Coonawarra has the potential for some luscious, approachable Pinot wines. Like this one.

The 2009 Vintage was excellent in Coonawarra with low tonnes and high quality, allowing plush plum and black cherry flavours to develop in the wines.
Aged in 100% French oak barrels.

RRP $19.95 but for the rest of May normally $239.4, now $203.50 save $35.

Dinner tonight - Beef and Olive Empanadas
Serves 4
Prep: 30 Minutes
Cooking: 20 Minutes

Beef and Olive Empanadas

Wine Review:
Murray St Benno shiraz 2008 $75

A rich luxurious wine with silkyness written all over it. Deep charry molasses but finishes with a nice mint feel, showing it came off before the heat wave.

95 points.

Ingredients

500 g minced beef
1 bunch spring onions, chopped
3 onions, diced
2 tbsp olive oil
½ tsp chilli flakes
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp paprika
100 g chopped olives, any kind
3 sheets shortcrust pastry
1 egg, beaten
salt and pepper

Method

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200ºC.

2. Heat oil in a pan, add onions and spices and stir for about 2 minutes. Add minced beef and stir until browned. Add olives and season to taste with salt and pepper, before leaving to cool.

3. Cut rounds out of the pastry with a medium-size circle cutter. Brush the borders with the egg. Place 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture in the centre of each circle, discarding excess liquid to prevent pastry becoming soggy.

4. Fold pastry in half over the filling and press the borders with a fork or fingers to seal tightly.

5. Place the empanadas on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Brush each with remaining egg to colour and then cook for 15-20 minutes.

Like Lana Del Rey? Then this will be right up your alley. Silky crooning melodies, this is a perfect album for a winters night a good book, and a big glass of warming shiraz. The hit was "Fade into you" but fall to sleep with the haunting ballad "Into Dust".

"Here's to a long life and a merry one.
A quick death and an easy one.
A pretty girl and an honest one.
A fine wine -  and another one."
