  • Koonara Wines Cape Banks Pinot Noir Mount Gambier 2013 James Halliday South Australia
Koonara Wines Pinot Noir Mount Gambier 2013
    $24.95

Cape Banks, Pinot Noir, Mount Gambier 2013

    ,
Cool growing conditions, rocky mineraly soils, and low-yielding vines have helped create a complex bouquet awash with true Pinot characters. It has hints of vanilla and fresh tobacco over spicy cherry notes. Mount Gambier is the perfect spot to create really good Pinot. The temperatures between Mount Gambier and the most famous French Pinot Noir region – Burgundy are extremely similar. If you add all the temperatures of the growing season together (minus 10 degree base temp), it gives you the Biological Effective Degree Days (BEDD). For 1st Cru Areas of Burgundy, the BEDD is 1242 and 1245 for Mt Gambier. Named after the Cape Banks Lighthouse, which is only 30mins drive from our vineyards, near Carpenter Rocks on South Australia’s rugged South East coastline. Food match: Tea smoked duck breast and roast potatoes with truffle salt. “Fragrant, fine and savoury, typical of Mount Gambier’s very cool climate; juicy red fruits, plus a superfine gossamer of tannins providing more flavour than the usual texture.” – James Halliday, 92 points Swedish Wine Challenge, Winestate Magazine, 4 stars Download tasting notes PDF

    Angel’s Peak, Shiraz, Coonawarra 2014

    ,
New release, and new label design! The painting of the wings was a 1.8m creation Dru did especially for the label. The name ‘Angels Peak’ is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the lack of ‘peaks’ in the very flat Coonawarra. No residual sugar, below organic levels of sulphur, 18 month in 100% French Oak Barrels (20% new). This wine has seamless mint dark chocolate and coffee notes, over silky mulberries and molasses. Lift this bottle to the light and try to see through the neck. The density of colour shows the quality of the grapes that went into this wine. Since flavour and deep colour in Shiraz comes from the skin, we grow our grapes smaller, about the size of a pea. Food match: Char-grilled eye fillet with wasabi and mascarpone soft cheese. The Golden Orb, Sparkling Shiraz, Coonawarra 2015

    ,
In our Shiraz vineyard lives the Golden Orb spider. During the summer they catch vineyard pests, which is one reason why we haven’t used pesticides in the vineyard for over ten years. What Australia does best! Aged in French oak barrel’s for 2 years, this is a elegant cool climate Shiraz, that will age well until 2025. Our aim is to make a complex sparkling Shiraz. Cool climate Shiraz works great as a sparkling, as the mint notes make it refreshing on hot days when you still want a steak. The oak age has given some nice Christmas cake complexity, but still with fresh blackcurrants and licorice. Food match: Christmas turkey or braised chile-spiced short ribs with black beans Download tasting notes PDF

The Desolate Soil Pinot, Pinot Noir, Mount Gambier 2012

    ,
Only 250 cases were made. This is not your normal reserve Pinot. Made in the style of Grand Cru’s Pinot in Burgundy, this has no tart cherry notes of many top Australian Pinots, but soft, elegant spice and silky plums. The best barrels make all the difference. Aged in the finest French Oak barrels for 27 months, it has created a wine which has seamless oak integration and longevity. Only 8 barrels were selected as the very best, and put into this Reserve. Mt Gambier is the coolest region in mainland Australia. This vineyard has only 10cm of soil covering the rocky limestone, which means the vines struggle, making smaller intense berries, as well as taking on elegant minerally character of the flint and limestone rocks. The temperature between Mt Gambier and Burgundy is extremely similar. If you add all the temperatures of the growing season together (minus 10 degree base temp), it gives you the Biological Effective Degree Days (BEDD). For 1st Cru Areas of Burgundy, the BEDD is 1242 and 1245 for Mt Gambier. Gold - Wine Showcase Magazine 93 points, BRONZE Melbourne International Wine Competition Download tasting notes PDF

    100% Coonawarra | Single vineyard

Ezra is the angel that encourages writers, and helps unlock self expression.

A cooler vintage in Coonawarra has allowed pepper characteristics to creep into the 2009 Shiraz, which additional layer of complexity to an already elegant wine. A tiny 1 tonne per acre was grown, and aged in 100% new fine grain French Grand Reserve Hogshead (300 litre) barrels.

The 2009 Ezra’s has a huge length of flavour of toasty mocha, blackcurrants, cloves and smoked vanilla.

It will age well to 2023 and beyond.

Ambriel’s Gift, Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra 2014

The Ambriel’s Gift vineyard sits behind our house in Coonawarra, and is grown at a tiny 1 tonne per acre (the average for Coonawarra is 3.5 - 4 tonnes). The grapes were grown with minimal intervention, with only 4 organic sprays for the season. No pesticides have been used in this vineyard for over 10 years. The Big Guns, Shiraz, Coonawarra 2012

    ,
The Big Guns is a tribute to my father Trevor Reschke, who was in the Australian national team for clay target shooting, and the state team over 20 times. More often than not you would find him shooting crows in this vineyard just before vintage. To this day crows still avoid it. This 3 acre vineyard produces tiny, intense berries, growing only 2.4 tonnes per acre. Aged for 24 months in the finest French Oak barrels; from these, the finest barrels are selected. This year only 3 barrels made the cut, creating only 100 cases, with only 888 bottles being released. Here's to you Trev. "A seriously good shiraz, wielding its power through persuasion, not brute force; high quality French oak is certainly obvious, but the waves of black fruits and ripe tannins carry the oak - or vice versa. Extended cellaring will be handsomely repaid." - James Halliday 96 points Gold Medal Rob Geddes MW, Gold Melbourne International Wine Competition 2016 Download tasting notes PDF

  • Koonara Wines Head Honcho Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra South Australia Velvet Collection
    koonara-coonawarra-head-honcho-cabernet-sauvignon-label
    $100.00

The Head Honcho, Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra 2012

    ,
The Head Honcho was created from our 10 acre single Cabernet vineyard. This vineyard produces small berries full of intense flavour, harvesting a tiny 1 tonne per acre. In the 2012 vintage, it had only organic additives, and no pesticides (none have been used in this vineyard for 10 years). We aged this wine for 24 months in the finest French Oak barrels. From these, only the most complex flavours from the finest barrels were selected. This year only 3 barrels made the cut, creating only 100 cases, with only 888 bottles being released. The French Oak barrels have integrated beautifully in this wine. The darkest of dark berries went into this; blueberry, cassis, and molasses over mint. Extremely long finish. The Head Honcho will age well until 2042. "Even more concentrated and focused than the Family Reserve Ambriel's Gift, with more blackcurrant fruit and more tannins." - James Halliday 95 points "Intense black fruit aromas with a sweet oak lift. The palate is dark and closed at the moment with very pure varietal fruit characters and excellent tannin definition." - 4.5 stars Winestate Magazine July/August 2016
